ara Croft must be one of the most successful and best known video game character.
With a music single, a movie,
and an animated series in
the works, featured in all computer games in the world (and interviewed
at least by one) both printed and on-line, with dedicated Internet sites (really?),
talked about in TV and in more "serious" press, her only rivals
from Britain must be the Spice Girls.
The Economist (yes, The Economist!) in a February '97 article
about Britain's videogame industry stated: "What man could resist a creature
like Lara Croft? This ravishing British heiress divides her time between acrobatic
workouts in her stately home and dangerous expeditions to exotic ruins. She wears
shorts everywhere, which show off her sprinter's legs, and a tiny waist draws attention
to her gravity-defying bust. Then there is the small matter of the twin automatic
pistols she straps to her bare thighs.
The fact that Lara is synthetic does not lessen her appeal. Indeed, her fans would have
it no other way."
The May issue of british magazine The Face featured no other than Lara herself in
the front cover, describing her as "bigger than Pammy, wiser than Yoda",
and dedicating her a total of eight pages.
with an exclusive fashion photo session and an interview with her creator Toby Gard.
In C|NET's GAMECENTER.COM review of Tomb Raider, Hugh Falk said:
"I've seen movies where people meet someone who so intrigues them that
they burst into song. I have recently met such a woman--Lara Croft, heroine of a
new game from Eidos Interactive called Tomb Raider. Here's my first attempt at
songwriting (sung to the tune of 'Lola' by the Kinks): ''I'm not dumb, but I can't
understand why she walks like a woman but shoots like a man; oh my Lara, L-A-R-A,
Lara.'' Maybe songwriting isn't my forte, but I can't help myself. It's rare
that I meet such an attractive character. Save your perverted thoughts; this
isn't physical attraction (although she has a set of polygons like you won't
believe). This is the attraction players feel when a game's main character is
so well developed that they become immersed in the story."
GAMECENTER.COM also included Lara in
Female characters worth dying for!,
stating that "any woman who would be perfectly comfortable in either
an evening gown or a flack jacket is definitely at the top of my femme fatale list.
Judging by the effect this beauty has had on gamers around the globe, she's at
the top of a lot of people's lists."
With the upcoming Tomb Raider 2, Lara's popularity will rise skyhigh. Eidos Interactive
already stated that they intend to "open out the franchising for
Tomb Raider and Lara".
If the movie comes out, Lara will sure be a household name next year.
And then we come to the question that every Lara fan is asking: Who will
play the part of Lara? Sandra Bullock seems to be the number one in the
hearth of the fans everywhere, at least according to the many "votes"
we can see through the Internet. But we all have to wait to see...
Biography
Born in England at 14th February 1967, raised as an aristocrat, the
daughter of Lord Henshingly Croft, Lara was a high-society debutante
when, at the age of 21, on the return from a skiing trip her plane
crashes in the Himalayas.
As the only survivor, Lara had to learn to survive in the wilderness, away
from her sheltered upbringing. After two weeks she arrives at the village of
Tokakeriby, she was safe but her live had changed forever.
She soon finds out that the upper-class British society is a bit to
claustrophobic for her, and starts her voyages of discovery and exploration
around the world. She is soon disowned by her family and turns to writing
as a mean to fund her trips.
At 29, having published several books and journals detailing her discoveries
of several important remains of ancient civilizations, she's contacted by
Jacqueline Natla to recover the Atlantean Scion...
Known discoveries
???? - The Ark of the Covenant (it's in her living room)
1996 - The Atlantean Scion
1997 - The Dagger of Xian (?)
